Matching Patterns!

How to match patterns with fabrics, wallpapers, trims, and more!

Elevate your home decor by learning how to match bold patterns and colors!

An inspiration board using various Thibaut products/fabrics

One of our favorite things to do is create inspiration boards and collections using bold colors and patterns. Read below to see how we make it happen! This is one of our most recently curated boards.

We find it easiest to use the colors in a bold fabric to our advantage when trying to match various components.

Tip #1 - Pick your inspiration piece!

Whether you found a fabric you love, a beautiful piece of furniture, or a striking wallpaper, using this inspiration piece and building your design around it is one of the easiest ways to successfully match patterns!

Once you find the best color matches in the piece, it makes it so much easier to start adding in more depth with trims and other fabrics! *Notice how the focal point of our inspiration board is the large floral print in the background, this is the pattern we based our other choices around.

Tip #2 - Choose what style you are going for

What type of style do you imagine for your home decor? Chinoiserie Chic, Boho, modern, or are you trying to create a fun statement piece to add to a room? Once you get this idea going, it is easy to start searching for the right fabric. We find it easiest to start with one bold fabric that you love and build around it to create the finished design.

Tip #3 - Find fun embellishments

Don't be afraid to add fun touches to your piece, like tassels, tape trims, and more.

We chose to use a fun appliqué tape trim to add some dimension and a subtle pattern in the board above.

Tip #4 - Mix it up

Try adding some new textures to the mix, like a drapery fabric, a fur, or a fun wallpaper. We find that using a couple different types of fabric/embellishments helps add some sophistication to designs.

The light blue wallpaper has a slight texture to it, we love the additional depth it gives our design.

Tip #5 - Finish up matching your patterns!

Finalizing your designs and bringing the design for your decor together is the best part of the process!

Take a step back from the design and make sure you love everything you've incorporated. Sometimes if it feels like there may be "too much" in an inspiration board we alternate taking different items out of the design to figure out the best version we created!
